A residual current device compares the current flowing out with the current returning; when the difference (leakage) exceeds the set value, it disconnects the circuit and protects against electric shock and fires caused by leakage. A type A device detects pulsating DC residual currents as well as the sinusoidal AC currents detected by type AC. It is therefore preferred on circuits for EV chargers, inverter air conditioners and heat pumps, washing machines and dishwashers, LED drivers and other electronic equipment.

Legrand XC10 is a new generation of residual current circuit breakers (RCCB) made at the Gebze factory. They comply with EN/IEC 61008-1, are TSE certified, have an electrical life of 10,000 operations and work from −25 °C to +70 °C. 2-pole models are 230 V and 2 modules wide; 4-pole models are 400 V and 4 modules wide (neutral on the left). The coloured marking on the toggle shows the contact position; the devices can be supplied by busbar and accept auxiliary and fault signal contacts.

30 mA sensitivity is for personal protection: if someone gets a shock, it disconnects the circuit before the current reaches a level dangerous to the human body – the value used for homes, bathrooms and socket circuits. 300 mA is for fire protection: it disconnects leakage caused by insulation faults and is usually used as main protection at the building entrance or in larger installations. An RCCB does not protect against short circuit or overload; it is always used together with a suitable circuit breaker and its rating must not be lower than the breaker upstream.

We use 40 A type A RCCBs in our EV charger installations. If your charger has no 6 mA DC residual current detection, a type B device may be required – check the charger's technical data. Our guide explains the details.
