Downlights & Spotlights
How to choose a downlight
A downlight is a point luminaire recessed into a suspended ceiling or mounted directly on the ceiling. Its COB LED light source gives strong, crisp light from a single point, and the reflector focuses it at the desired angle. Downlights are used in homes, offices, shops and hotels for both general and accent lighting.
- Recessed downlight: for suspended ceilings; the cut-out size is on the product page.
- Surface-mounted downlight: for concrete or timber ceilings or rooms without a suspended ceiling; pendant lengths are also available.
- Tiltable downlight: to aim the light at artwork, shelves or walls.
- IP65 downlight: for bathrooms, eaves and damp areas.
- GU10 downlight: housing with a replaceable lamp.
Choose the beam angle for the room: narrow (15°–24°) for accents, medium (30°–45°) for mixed use, wide (60°) for general lighting. For general lighting, a spacing of 1–1.5 metres between downlights is common.
Lamptime luminaires are made to order with the colour temperature, housing colour and optic you choose and ship within 1–3 business days. For projects and bulk orders, write to us for help choosing luminaires and calculating quantities.
The cut-out (mounting) size of each product is in the technical table on the product page. There must be at least the height of the luminaire free above the suspended ceiling.
For general lighting, downlights are placed about 1–1.5 metres apart; 6–9 downlights are usually enough for a 15 m² room, depending on ceiling height and the required light level.
Around the shower and bath, use IP65-rated downlights. In the rest of the bathroom, IP44 or higher is recommended.
