It diverts short high-voltage surges from lightning or grid switching to earth and protects the appliances in the installation. Circuit breakers and RCCBs do not protect against such surges.

Can I use this SPD in a single-phase home?

No. The 4 103 45 is for three-phase (3 phases + neutral) installations. Single-phase installations use a 1-pole + neutral SPD.

Where is a T2 SPD installed?

In the main distribution panel after the meter, after the main breaker. If the building has a lightning rod or an overhead supply, a T1 or T1+T2 SPD may also be required at the origin; this is set in the installation design.

When should an SPD be replaced?

A cartridge may reach the end of its life after diverting a large surge. In that case only the cartridge (Legrand 4 103 04) is replaced. Have your electrician check the panel during periodic inspections.

A surge protective device (SPD) protects the installation and appliances after the panel by diverting short, high overvoltages caused by lightning or switching events on the grid to earth. TVs, computers, boiler boards, air conditioners, EV chargers and other electronics are sensitive to these surges.

Legrand 4 103 45 is a Type 2 (T2) SPD for use after the meter. It has 3 phases + neutral for 230/400 V three-phase networks, a nominal discharge current (In) of 20 kA, a maximum discharge current (Imax, 8/20 wave) of 45 kA and a maximum continuous operating voltage (Uc) of 320 V. It is suitable for TT, TN-C and TN-S earthing systems. The protection modules are replaceable cartridges; the Legrand spare cartridge reference is 4 103 04.

Good earthing is essential, because the discharge current flows through the earth conductor. The SPD should be connected in the main panel after the main breaker with short cables and protected by a breaker of the rating recommended by the manufacturer. Installation must be carried out by a qualified electrician.
