How to choose the right home EV charger
Charging at home is the most convenient and economical part of owning an electric car. The right charger is chosen according to your car, your electrical installation and your daily driving.
1. Charging power: 7.4 kW, 11 kW or 22 kW?
In single-phase homes the practical limit is 7.4 kW at 32 A. With a three-phase supply you can reach 11 kW at 16 A or 22 kW at 32 A. The car's on-board charger is decisive, however: a car that accepts 11 kW will charge at 11 kW on a 22 kW wallbox too.
For someone who drives 40–50 km a day, a 7.4 kW charger easily refills the battery overnight.
2. Have your installation checked
A charger draws high current for hours. It therefore needs a dedicated circuit, a cable of the right cross-section and the correct breaker. Ask a qualified electrician to check whether your contracted power is sufficient; if not, an increase can be requested from the grid operator.
3. Tethered or socket?
- Tethered models: the cable is fixed to the unit, giving plug-and-go convenience every day.
- Socket models: you use your own Type 2 cable, which is flexible for shared car parks and different vehicles.
4. Safety and smart features
Protection against DC residual currents is essential for EV charging. Units with built-in Type A + 6 mA DC detection reduce the need for extra protection; otherwise a Type B residual current device is required. A mobile app, scheduled charging, RFID and dynamic load balancing make it easier to manage energy costs and the load on your installation.
